ISO 9001: does the process deliver what it should, every time?
The standard for how an organization runs and improves its processes, and what an independent internal audit, assessment or transition gap assessment of it looks at.

What the standard achieves, in business terms
A quality management system is the way an organization runs and improves its processes: the requirements of customers and other interested parties, the process approach, risk-based thinking, measurement, internal audit and management review, improvement. It applies to a software company, a service firm and a manufacturer alike. It is not product inspection, and it is not a binder.
Why internal audits and management review matter
The audit programme is the organization's own view of whether its processes conform and perform. A good internal audit looks at the process as it runs, the measures it reports, and what happened when it didn't deliver. Management review turns the findings into decisions.
How an independent review differs from a conformity check
A conformity check asks whether each clause is covered. An effectiveness review asks whether the process delivers. You receive a plan, graded findings with their evidence, a report and a closing meeting.
The ISO 9001:2026 transition gap assessment
ISO 9001:2026, the sixth edition, was published on 16 September 2026. Organizations certified to the 2015 edition have until 30 September 2029 to transition; after that date, accredited 2015 certificates are no longer valid. The transition audit can be combined with a surveillance or recertification audit, or run as a separate audit. A clearly scoped transition gap assessment shows where your existing system stands against the new edition, and what to change before your certification body audits against it.
How it connects to AI and ISO/IEC 42001
An AI step inside a quality process, say a model that inspects parts, is still a process step the QMS has to control: its inputs, its outputs, and what happens when it is wrong. An organization running ISO 9001 already has most of the machinery ISO/IEC 42001 asks for.
